What is normalising?

Normalising is a heat treatment used to improve the mechanical properties of materials with structural irregularities, heterogeneous structures and coarse microstructures after production, such as castings, forgings or rolled sheet.

This process modifies the structure of metal parts to improve their performance.

Normalising involves heating the material rapidly to a specified target temperature and holding it there for a defined time. The material is then cooled in air under controlled conditions. During heating, the microstructure transforms fully to austenite, and a finer, more uniform structure develops on cooling. Hypoeutectoid steels develop ferrite and pearlite, while hypereutectoid steels develop pearlite and cementite.
