What is stress relieving?

Thermal and mechanical processing can introduce stresses into metals. These stresses may cause the material to move outside dimensional tolerances in later processes or even lead to failure in service. Stress relief is therefore an important step. Stress-relief annealing reduces internal stresses without changing the fundamental properties of the material.

Stress relieving reduces internal stresses through microscopic plastic deformation. The material is heated to a specified temperature and held there for a defined period. During this process, yield strength and ultimate tensile strength decrease, allowing internal stresses to relax. Stress relieving typically takes several hours at temperatures between 500 and 650 °C. Heating and cooling are slow and controlled to avoid cracks or new stresses. At these temperatures, adverse effects such as decarburisation or scale formation are also limited.

Stress relieving is used for large, complex parts, welded assemblies and parts that undergo multiple processing steps. It is also selected for products where dimensional tolerances are important.

At Termosan Isıl İşlem Sanayi ve Ticaret A.Ş., our specially designed processes effectively relieve internal stresses in your parts, helping you obtain stronger, more durable and reliable metal components.

We are happy to help improve the performance and durability of your metal parts through heat treatment solutions such as stress relieving.
